How And When To Dive For A Ball

E-mail Print PDF

You're poised in the outfield, ready to jump when the batter hits a screamer towards the gap.  As you turn and sprint to make a play, you're faced with a tough decision...do you let the ball drop and go to the wall, or do you dive for it...possibly risking a triple?

Depending on the size of the field and the score during the game...go for it!  Balls that are hit into the gaps usually have two outfielders chasing down the ball.  Should one outfielder dive, the other should be backing up the diving outfielder in the event the ball does get by.  Proper communication and some practice will help your outfielders learn to play tough, hard hit balls.
