crossfitBuilding Your Optimal Fitness Level

By Max Fernandez, founder, Crossfit South County™

It seems today that gyms and sport training facilities throughout the world have the general public believing that split body part routines and balancing balls followed by 30 minutes of cardio is going to lead to some type of extraordinary fitness.  A bicep curl or bench press never developed an athlete to his or her maximum potential, nor will it ever.  Baseball and its physical movements are centered around ballistic movements and involve moving the entire body in a kinetic chain with split-second precision, not slow, static movements being performed lying on a bench.
Ask yourself “what makes a great athlete?” You might say an individual who is very powerful or extremely fast; you might even say an individual with the greatest skill at their sport.  So what physical attributes determine a great athlete?  Is it muscle size?  Speed?  Agility?  How about a combination of all attributes?

What drives a football running back through the line of defense, then has the agility, strength and speed to find the hole and explode for a touchdown?  How does overall strength and fitness drive the kinetic chain in a baseball swing or pitch?  At CrossFit South County, we believe a superior athlete is one who is most fit in all 10 fitness domains.  These domains are:

-    Speed                -    Balance
-    Strength            -    Accuracy
-    Stamina            -     Cardiovascular Endurance
-    Power                -    Muscular Endurance
-    Agility                -    Flexibility

We know that true athletes train the body as one unit because the body is one unit. The one true way to develop an athlete in these areas is by varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. We achieve this by combining compound exercises targeting more muscle groups than one and pushing the body past its functional plateau.

Our primary concern at CrossFit South County is to strengthen and balance these domains in all athletes and increase their Optimal Fitness Levels.  We focus on strength and speed and with these two combined, you will find a very powerful athlete…”a force to be reckoned with”!!!   If an athlete is strong in all these areas, he or she will undoubtedly be the better performer on game day.
